Wilkinson is a specialist developer of document output management solutions. Founded by Murray Wilkinson in 1969, the company’s mission is to help businesses achieve greater efficiency and productivity by automating the processes of document creation, distribution and storage.

From its headquarters in Melbourne, Australia, Wilkinson Electronic Document Solutions markets its products via a select network of distributors and resellers worldwide. More than 400 customers rely on the company’s WilComm suite to send, receive, store and retrieve their documents quickly and cost-effectively.

Company History

With a background in cost and financial accounting, an early career change led Murray Wilkinson to an IBM data centre in Canada, where he trained as a computer programmer. Back home in Melbourne a few years later, Murray rejoined IBM as an account manager, responsible for sales of service bureau and mainframe solutions.

In 1969 Murray purchased the computer services business of a rival service bureau, which specialised in the provision of billing services for medical practices. When the need arose to send mail merge letters promoting the company’s services, Murray had to develop his own software due to the lack of a commercially-available product.

This innovative Z-Word word processing system became a saleable product in its own right, and also paved the way for an expanded hardware and software portfolio that included protocol converters, NEC printers, the WilTel telex interface and the WilPlex fax server.

It was the advent of Windows in the 1990s that created the market opportunity for electronic forms and led to the development of the early forms package known as WilComm. Created initially to meet the need for forms faxing, WilComm has evolved into a fully-featured document output management with the ability to create, print, fax, email, file and archive a full range of electronic forms and documents.
